At this stage of our fight against
climate change I would
expect that most people are well aware
of at least the
high level environmental
risks, their effect on global warming and
the devastating results we are seeing in
worldwide weather. Lately there seem to
be hundreds of
extreme weather events
all over the world including heatwaves
in Beijing, floods in Nepal and
wildfires in Canada, Maui and Tenerife.
No one can deny that these events have
been increasing each year as a
direct
result of climate change and in a
bizarre twist of fate many of these are
happening at major
tourist destinations.

Upcoming BarnOwl Info Sharing
Session
|
|
|
A poly-crisis is
characterised by the occurrence of
numerous
crises simultaneously
or in rapid succession,
resulting in a complex and
interconnected web of challenges for governments, organisations, and
societies. Over the past eight years,
South Africa has faced recurrent risks
that have persisted and intensified,
paving the way for where we are finding
ourselves; Are we getting away with it?
Economic challenges, including stagnant
growth, high unemployment, and
persistent inequality, have consistently
ranked among the major risks facing the
country. So what? What are we not
seeing and is it a wake-up call
for better risk management?

Session

BarnOwl is constantly being enhanced
to take advantage of new platforms and
technologies. New versions of BarnOwl
not only contain technological enhancements and the latest new features, but also performance enhancements and
fixes. In addition, older versions (major
version-1 (i.e. version 9 and older))
are not supported by BarnOwl. It is
therefore important that
you upgrade your
BarnOwl on a regular basis.
BarnOwl’s upgrade process is a fully
automated wizard-driven approach, enabling you to schedule and
perform your own upgrade in your own
time, including your IT CAB (Change
Advisory Board) approval, booking
additional BarnOwl training, user
acceptance testing (UAT), change
management and final roll-out to your
production environment.
In this session we will cover the
pre-requisites for upgrading and
demonstrate a step by step walk through of the upgrade process.
The session is aimed at all BarnOwl
champions as well a representative
from your IT department responsible
for your BarnOwl environment.
Facilitator: Jonathan Crisp and Christo de
Bruyn

Lionel for your most informative
presentation on ‘The state of AI and
AI in corporate governance’ at the
BarnOwl info-sharing event held on 17
August 2023. Thank you too, to all
those who attended the session. We
have entered a new era of technology
revolution with the mainstream
emergence of generative AI, with disruptive impact already
across multiple industries. This
session discussed the state of AI, its potential to accelerate
growth and innovation as
well as its impact to business. The session covered risks and
governance considerations for boards
of directors, including the Business Judgement Rule and the Directors’ and
Officers’ liability Insurance.

Spotlight Session Insight
|
|
|
Thank you very much to everyone who
joined the
Spotlight session on
the 27th July 2023 and to Lizelle for
presenting our new and exciting BarnOwl
Power BI and SSRS report packs.
One of the most important benefits
of a system is to be able
to generate value-add reports at the
click of a button. BarnOwl’s interactive, drill-down
Power BI reporting makes it easy to view
aggregated information as well as
analyse information at lower levels
showing the effects of all inter-related
risk information. BarnOwl’s standard
SSRS reporting allows for
detailed tabular-type
(printable) reporting at any level of
the organisation.

Did you know?
Version 11 offers our clients a fresh,
modern and simplified web application
enabling you to easily capture and
maintain all your risk management
related activities. In addition, Version
11, provides access to BarnOwl’s
standard Power BI reporting and tabular
SSRS reporting.
Step 1: Capture and maintain risk
information: BarnOwl’s web app provides an easy and
structured way to capture and maintain
all risk information (i.e. objectives,
risks, contributing factors, controls,
action plans, loss events etc.). In
addition, BarnOwl builds your risk
library as you go which facilitates a
common risk taxonomy across multiple
units / sites and saves significant time
when capturing ‘transversal’ risk
data Step 2: Power BI and SSRS
reporting: BarnOwl provides interactive Power BI
dashboards as well as tabular-type
reports using SSRS (SQL Server Reporting
Services). The BarnOwl web app will also
include basic built-in reporting in
future versions. Step 3: Action plan update and
monitoring: BarnOwl provides a user friendly
action plan portal (via a desktop icon /
link) enabling owners to update their
action plans in real time on demand. In
addition, BarnOwl can be configured to
send out automated email notifications,
reminders and escalation and / or a
consolidated email per month to the
action plan owners. An advantage of the
V11 web app is that the action plan
owner can view the linked object from
within the action plan.
